Ras al-Khaimah enjoys unparalleled historical status going back to the Bronze Age, the Persian Empire and the early days of the Islamic Caliphate. Historians and archeologists have recorded and unearthed remnants of ancient civilizations as well as evidence of trade and commerce between people in the Middle East, Asia, Northern Africa, and Europe. Ras al-Khaimah was home to the great cartographer and mariner Ahmed bin Majid, the Lion of the Sea, who wrote groundbreaking observations about seamanship and celestial navigation. At the time Columbus was discovering the Americas, Ahmed bin Majid was writing impressive maritime tomes that would later impress European explorers and strengthen the skill of Arab sailors. Ras Al Khaimah is ruled by Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi a descendant of the Qawasim Clan.
